Short of compromising public safety, Audi has figured out a way to make those vexing traffic lights a bit more driver-friendly. With a little help from the German government the automaker set out to fit some 50 stop lights near its Ingolstadt headquarters with special data sensors that actually help drivers make the green!

According to Cars.com, the pilot network of 'smart' traffic signals functions by interfacing with a vehicle and alerting the driver to the most optimal speed required for non-stop driving. The light network, for its part, "adapts to traffic patterns to deliver optimum light switching."

A faster, more expedient commute is just one of the benefits of Audi's next-generation traffic system. Another is the fact that a smoother ride with less stops saves fuel by cutting idle periods. It also helps reduce engine wear - an especially important consideration when driving the likes of a brand new S6!
