While criticism of AT&T's inability to properly handle iPhones over the weekend certainly seems deserved, it should be noted that perhaps some service issues were to be expected, given the sheer volume of handsets Apple managed to move: one million phones in three days.
The company issued a release today stating that it had managed to do just that, thanks to the 21 countries in which the phone is currently available: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K., and the U.S.
"iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," said Steve Jobs. "It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world."
Maybe next time they'll see this coming.

Agreed - usually I dismiss a lot of the opening day waahmbulance calls as coming from people who don't get that any opening day for anything is going to be wrought with problems, lines, malfunctions, and trouble.
But damn if a million isn't a huge number. I'm with you there - I'll give Apple and AT&T some leeway for having a rough weekend, but it'd better be smooth sailing here out as they ramp up to meet demand, and next time it'd better be silky.
