PC Magazine cell phone analyst Sascha Segan is at the midtown NYC Apple store right now and reports that some customers are having trouble activating their new iPhone 3G's.
Hooking up the new phones to the AT&T network is supposed to take about 15 minutes, but Sascha says that some customers have been waiting up to 45 minutes to get the phones working.
We fired off an e-mail to AT&T to see if this is a network issue due to demand, and they said they are looking into it. Stay tuned.
Let us know in the comments section if you had activation issues (or are still in line).

I was told that these can be activated at home, due to issues with activation in store. I am trying it now to see if it works.

AT&T actually let me take my iPhone 3G home to activate beacuse iTunes had come to a standstill... Does this mean that my phone is "unlocked" if it was not set up in the store?

I waited in line at 4:30 am this morning to get a non-working iphone. They could not "unbrick" the phone in the store, so they sent me home to do it myself. I have been trying for 1 hour and 40 minutes. No LUCK. AT&T told me this is a nationwide issue.
The AT&T store said they have yet to send someone out of the store with a working iphone!

I had got my white Iphone at around 8:47am this morning near Scranton PA. I didn't leave the store until 10am. I was told as well to go and activate from home. I am not surprised. Everybody is hitting Itunes at once.

Yeah if Apple put this process in place, should have added hardware to handle this. This is absolute nonsense

I was also sent away with an bricked iPhone. I arrived at my local AT&T store just before 8 am and there was a (seemingly) short line, only about 15 people in front of me. Still I had to wait for over an hour before I was even allowed in the store. They ran into a number of different problems with the new activation interface and with porting numbers from different carriers. I had a seemingly simple transaction since I was upgrading an existing and eligible AT&T line, however they were not able to unbrick my iPhone in the store. Once it was connected iTunes just lagged and said "Connecting to iTunes Store..."
I've looked into this online and it seems that you load your own 'Activation Only' version of iTunes : http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/general-iphone-chat/210581-unbrick-iphone-3g-store-only-version-itunes.html but when I try to do this it gives me a network connection error after about 2 minutes. I called my AT&T store and the guy said other people are having similar problems. He thinks it is an issue because so many people are trying to access the system at once, so he told me to keep trying for a while. We'll see how it goes...

Same issues as folks above. I was 12th in line at 5.55am...Left the store at 10.30am with 2 bricks...one for me and my wife. No luck connecting yet from home.

in line in phoenix right now. Going much slower than last year. Upgraded phone this am with 2.0, took over an hour to reactivate my existing phone and can't sync my calendars or contacts.

Waiting in line in Salem, NH for 3 hours now. Line has stopped several times because AT&T's servers keep crashing...according to Apple employees. I guess mo one learned any lessons from the 1st launch. Instead of letting people leave with phones, now they create an even bigger logjam requiring in-store activation.
Boo.

Quite a problem...I too was one of the lucky ones to show up at 4:00 and get a phone at 9:00. I'm still in the process of activating the phone as we speak. It took an AT&T customer service rep 14 minutes to tell me what I had already figured out (itunes is fu*ked for probably 48 hours). So much for the early bird gets the worm.
