I know The Dark Knight has his own car, but this one has to be a close second. While the regular Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG was already no slouch, the Black Series promises to be significantly faster. That's because, as Car & Driver reports, the new car weighs a stunning 550 lbs less than the "regular" AMG version.
Here's how AMG did it: they removed the original car's folding hardtop mechanism and gave it a fixed, flatter roof instead. They also changed out the front splitter, the hood, the trunk lid, and the rear spoiler for carbon fiber parts. Engine-wise, the car gets a boost 604 to 661 horsepower due to numerous upgrades. AMG had to detune the engine to match the original SL65 AMG's 738 lb. ft of torque rating; left unchecked, it would produce 885 lb. ft and likely blow the car's five-speed automatic transmission to smithereens. Speaking of which, the transmission gets a new M2 shift mode that speeds up gear changes by 25 percent each.
All of these power improvements come courtesy of larger turbochargers, revised intake ducting, a new exhaust system, a new intercooler, and an upgraded cooling system to "keep the engine from melting itself," the report said. The new version—which cuts a lower, wider profile and has some insane-looking wheel arches—can hit 198 mph. Inside, the tach gets LED shift lights, while the steering wheel is smaller and flat on the bottom. The whole interior is dressed in black and carbon fiber. $250k buys you a place in line; only 350 copies will be built.
