Toyota_fuel_cell.jpgToyota announced that it has developed a fuel cell hybrid vehicle equipped with their newly designed high-performance Toyota FC Stack, Next Energy News reports. The concept can start and operate in cold temperatures as low as 30 degrees below zero (Celsius), has a 25 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to their last fuel cell car, and most importantly, can travel "approximately 500 miles" before refueling.

So what exactly is an FC Stack? Its core component is the Membrane Electrode Assembly, which prevents internally produced water from interfering with electrical generation at low temperatures, the report said. Meanwhile, the 25% efficiency improvement came from improving the fuel cell's basic performance, enhancing the car's regenerative braking system, and reducing energy consumption by an unspecified "auxiliary system." (You know, it's hard enough to understand what's going on in these experimental vehicles without vagaries such as this.) At any rate, 500 miles is a killer range for any alternative fuel vehicle.
