They display the same functionality as side mirrors--that is ascertain you don't accidentally crash with the vehicles behind you--but they're actually monitors showcased by Toshiba at the Automotive Engineering Exposition 2008. The technology simulates real life side mirrors, even having one monitor each for the right and the left flanks of your vehicle. The technology was made possible by using "Visconti," an image processing LSI for vehicles and a Cycrone II-mounted circuit board which displays the monitor's 640 × 480 color VGA images. Honda Legend owners might recorgnize the Visconti \ as part of their "Intelligent Night Vision System."
So, as you can see on the image, the side mirror monitors can show, just like their real counterparts, the traffic flow behind and beside you. Aside from this, the technology can do something no real side mirrors can--it uses an image recognition technology which calculates the distance between you and another vehicle, going from yellow to green as the distance narrows and then finally, to red when the closeness in proximity becomes a hazard.
