There's lots of general auto industry news today about declining car sales, and how GM is planning to close four plants and is also considering dropping the HUMMER brand. But what's more telling is this statistic: cars outsold the top-selling Ford F-series truck in May for the first time since 1992, which the Associated Press calls a sign of the rapid shift in customers' preferences from trucks and SUVs to small cars.
It wasn't just one car, either: the Toyota Camry, the Toyota Corolla, the Honda Accord, and the Honda Civic all outsold the Ford F-series, which posted a stunning 31 percent drop in sales from April to May.
Even Toyota's overall U.S. sales dropped 4 percent for the month, the article said, as flat results for cars were dragged down by a 12 percent decline in trucks and SUVs for the number two automaker in the world. This comes amid an announcement from Toyota that they plan to sell one million hybrids per year soon, and are considering opening a U.S. plant specifically to build the Prius.
