Harman/Becker Automotive Systems announced that its latest generation MMI (Multi Media Interface) 3G infotainment system will debut in the new Audi Q5 compact crossover this coming fall. The system will incorporate an NVIDIA graphics chipset to ensure that maps transition smoothly on screen, even when the car is changing direction; the display will also show a 3-D, real-time landscape with true-to-scale terrain.
The company is also promising photo-realistic depiction of points of interest that will show key landmarks as well as branded logos—look, the Golden Arches! Just the thing to take your eyes off the road.
The system will accept voice commands for audio, cell phone, address book and navigation functions in eight languages. It will also includes a USB port, iPod connectivity, a satellite digital radio that works in the U.S. and in Europe, and—get this—a built-in, quad-band GSM cell phone that accepts actual SIM cards. The company said there will be map data available for the U.S., Canada, and 43 European countries.
