General Motors plans to build 10,000 Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric cars for the 2011 model year—its first year of production—followed by 60,000 the second year, GM vice chairman and product chief Bob Lutz said in a Car & Driver report. The trick, he explained, will be sourcing enough batteries for production.
That's a problem Toyota is intimately familiar with, as the company has expressed on numerous occasions that it can't build enough Priuses to meet demand specifically for that reason.
The report also said that the Volt still is on track for sale in November 2010, and that GM is targeting a price of under $40,000 for the electric car. Recent reports put the car's range at 40 miles on electricity alone, with a companion gasoline generator that expands its total range to around 400 miles.
