As it stands, versatile, high-quality gas sippers like Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and Nissan Versa have virtually no American-made rivals. But that may soon change with the arrival of the fuel-savvy Ford Fiesta.
Though it may sport a familiar blue oval, the Fiesta is practically as foreign as any of the above-mentioned econorides. Designed by Ford Europe and with models currently on sale all throughout Europe, South America and Asia, it is one of the most commercially successful vehicles ever conceived. And now, after almost three decades, the new Fiesta is finally returning stateside.
Initially presented as Ford Verve concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September, the Fiesta should make it to the US by 2010. According to Edmunds, Ford will build both the hatchback and sedan versions of the vehicle at its plant in Cuautitlán, Mexico "as part of a $3 billion investment in the country."
