This question from Cindy Cannon came in for ExtremeTech editor, Loyd Case:
My son bought my grandson a PC (a 1.6-GHz eMachine T3638 with 1GB of RAM) that does not have a dedicated graphics card. Since my grandson uses it primarily for gaming, he soon discovered the need for more graphics capacity. I am skeptical that it's even possible to add a graphics card to a machine that doesn't have one.
Loyd's answer after the jump:
Loyd's reply:
According to the system specs, the eMachine T3638 has a free PCI Express X16 slot, which can be used for a video card. Note, however, that the system has only a 350W power supply. So your grandson can add a dedicated graphics card, but he'll have to be careful to get one that doesn't draw too much power. A good choice for a system like this is a card based on ATI's HD 3850 graphics chip.

Of course you can use your PCI-e slot to add a video card. Just be aware that all video cards have power supply requirements (or recommendations) & you may have to replace your grandson's computer's internal power supply to make the card and your grandson's computer function properly.
