Over the past couple of years, Audi has dominated the 24 hour Le Mans with its diesel-powered R10 TDI, running on a synthetic diesel derived from natural gas. But this time around, Audi plans to run biodiesel, Autopia reports. The company expects the cars to emit 90 percent less carbon dioxide than when burning conventional diesel, while still making over 650 hp on the track.
The report said that Audi and Royal Dutch Shell, which produces the fuel Audi Sport Team Joest runs in the cars, plan to add an undisclosed amount of biofuel produced from waste wood and other feedstocks through a process called biomass to liquids. The racing team has already begun track-testing the fuel ahead of the June 14-June 15 event.
