This question from Marvin P. Stein came in for ExtremeTech editor Loyd Case:

I have five computers using my Linksys N wireless network, which also includes an HP Color Laserjet 3600dn printer that is connected via USB cable to one of the computers.

My question is: How do I set up a second, separate wireless network which will also be able to print to that printer? I have clients who frequently bring in their wireless-enabled notebook computers. I want them to be able to print their reports to that printer (and possibly get access to the Internet) without giving them access to my WEP-encrypted network.

Loyd's reply:

Good news: The Color Laserjet 3600dn actually has an Ethernet port. By enabling the port, you should be able to connect a second wireless router that's configured differently from your existing one. I wouldn't recommend leaving the new network unprotected, however. You should still enable WPA or, at a minimum, WEP security, so that your neighbors can't suddenly start using your printer. You can always post the security key information for the customer Wi-Fi link for your clients.

Before diving into this, you should consult your printer's documentation or contact HP to make sure the USB port and the Ethernet port can be used simultaneously.
