Verizon Wireless just announced that VZ Navigator version 4, which the company first announced last month, is now available on the carrier's GPS-enabled consumer phones. The new version includes a number of significant upgrades, such as real-time traffic alerts in 75 major cities along with detours around traffic congestion and accidents. The new version also includes 3D map views, an event finder, local weather reports and forecasts, and gas station prices in the area.

The company said that the new traffic integration bases its detours and condition reports on historical data covering more than 750,000 miles of roads in 48 states. The detour options also display estimated time comparisons and real-time conditions. Another notable is the 3D view upgrade, which shows exactly how the road will look through the driver's windshield. I hope said driver continues to look through the actual windshield if the car is moving, but that's another story.

As before, VZ Navigator costs $9.99 for unlimited monthly access, or $2.99 for a one-day pass. Verizon customers with compatible Get It Now phones under Travel & Guides or Featured Apps.
