MTI%20GPS.jpgThink all navis are the same? Think again. The Mobion portable GPS system, presented at the 10th Annual International Small Fuel Cells Conference in Atlanta, GA, is actually powered by methanol!

According to GoodCleanTech, the New York-based off-grid power solutions provider MTI Micro claims that the new handheld GPS device is capable of operating continuously for up to 60 hours. The credit is due to its fuel cell system, consisting of methanol, ambient oxygen, and a catalytic membrane. Said to be three times more powerful than four AA batteries, the GPS prototype even comes with a USB interface, which can be used to recharge mobile phones, digital cameras, portable media players and other handheld electronic devices.

The company insists that the Mobion is ideally intended for hikers, campers and other avid outdoorsmen. I say a complementary dashboard mount could make it perfect for automobile travelers as well. If all goes as planned, we can expect to see the Mobion on sale sometime in 2009.
