Would you be caught dead checking your e-mail or surfing the Web on this absurdly-looking device? Developed during the Next-Gen PC Design competition, one finalist's AlphaGrip Handheld Computer (AlphaGrip HC) concept is an ergonomic device with a thumb-controlled trackball and "eight multi-directional keys that enable the user to generate 20 characters, each with a single finger pressing a single key, and an additional 60 characters using three shift buttons," according to the site.
Targeted to students, teachers, doctors, gamers, and software engineers, the AlphaGrip HC looks and feels like a game controller, and measures 6.6 by 6.3 by 3.5 inches (HWD), with a 3-inch screen size. The ergonomic design is supposed to make it easier for users to comfortably and quickly type text messages, e-mails, and documents, as well as take notes, enter data, play games, and perform graphic design. (Yes, the designer actually thinks graphic designers will benefit from using this device with a 3-inch screen!) There are also claims that your texting speed will increase by more than 200 percent, too. There are some other pretty wild concepts from the competition, too: the Clef Electronic Music Note stand, Coach's Clipboard fantasy sports league device, and Backpacker's Diary PC. [via OhGizmo!]

The really sad thing is that I'm betting this device has a fraction of the horsepower of your average iPhone or Blackberry, and yet will cost hundreds of dollars more.
