To deter burglars, many homeowners will use the typical approaches: a guard dog, alarm system, hidden camera. But have you ever considered tricking others into believing you're sleeping or out of the house?
The FakeTV ($39.95) is a device that consists of a opalescent diffuser lens and a super-bright multi-color LED lamp that gives the illusion that someone is watching real television programming. The device is said to produce a light output of a typical 27-inch LCD HDTV, too. It also has many TV-like effects, such as scene changes, fades, swells, on-screen motion, and color changes. Just plug it into the wall using the included adapter, and the FakeTV will automatically turn on each evening at dusk to simulate a TV watching experience. According to the site, it's best to use the device on a second floor room, "but a first floor room with translucent shades or blinds works fine, too."
Custom manufactured in Malaysia by Xenso Sdn. Bhd, the FakeTV is available at several retailers, including Home Security Pro and ThePersonalSurvivor.com.

You still need good locks, and a light on a timer remains a good idea. Stop the paper and mail when you are out of town, and get to know your neighbors - that gives you the extra benefit of a more-connected life. That said, the light from an operating television looks "alive", really conveys the impression that someone must be watching.

I think this is an excellent idea - uses a hell of a lot less electricity than a normal telly and won't wear out your plasma or lcd.
Have just ordered one but they wont be in stock till mid august (still before I go on holiday though)!
