The Wall Street Journal reported that Dell is taking the surprising step of axing its XPS line, leaving the high-end gaming business to its Alienware subsidiary.
Unfortunately, we've been trying unsuccessfully to reach Dell for a comment most of the morning, and we'll update when we hear anything.
For right now, however, it's not really all that surprising. There was always an overlap between the XPS line and Alienware, although Alienware chief executive Nelson Gonzalez had said that he didn't anticipate any overlap:
"Dell is going to do what they do," he said. "I'm sure they have no plans of eliminating the XPS," he said. "They're going to have their lineup; we're going to have ours."
The Alienware and Dell Renegade lines will "complement, not compete with one another," said Jess Blackburn, a Dell spokesman. Alienware will not sell Dell PCs, but may sell Dell peripherals, he said.
Word is that there's going to be an announcement supporting this, but I don't have any further details. EDIT 11:42 AM PDT: According to Dell, the XPS line is not going away.

I really really hope the XPS line doesn't go anywhere...they've been pretty much the go-to computers for tech-savvy or power-hungry PC consumers. I know people who are out there now clamoring for XPS laptops and desktops, and the price gap between the XPS series and even some of Alienware's low-end machines is a little disconcerting. :(
