The CG-Lock, an aftermarket seat belt upgrade, was just announced as a finalist for the Adaptive Driving Alliance's 2008 New Technology Award for mobility-impaired drivers. Some back story: the CG-Lock was introduced in 2004, costs $41.98, and attaches to existing factory seat belts. It allows the driver or passenger to adjust the lap belt tension so that it's as tight as a racing harness, while leaving the shoulder belt unrestrained for more upper-body freedom of movement. With the award, now the device is being offered to mobility-impaired drivers that use hand controls, and are unable to use their legs to brace themselves.

"The CG-Lock is the first seatbelt add-on engineered to effectively help mobility impaired drivers and passengers overcome sitting instability issues," said Bruce Mather, president and chief technology officer of CG-Lock, in a company statement. For videos that show how the product works, check out the company's Web site.
