8703e.jpg I'm just out to squash a meme that keeps on popping up, no matter how hard people step on it. The new Blackberry Bold looks interesting for many reasons - but being the "first 3G BlackBerry" isn't one of them.

RIM actually released their first 3G BlackBerry in 2005: the 7130e, put out by Verizon. The even earlier 7250 later got an upgrade to 3G. Their first model using the 3G GSM UMTS system came out in 2006, the 8707, which came in 'v', 'g' and 'h' varieties for different carriers. Since then, they've had four other 3G models - the 8703e (shown at left), the 8830, 8130, and 8330.

The Bold will be a first: it'll be the first 3G BlackBerry to be released on AT&T, specifically. But in terms of 3G Blackberries, it's actually the eighth. Sadly, that doesn't play into some people's "1st 3G BB vs 3G iPhone!!!!!!" narratives.
