AT&T said Wednesday that it plans to drive the golden spike into its HSUPA 3G network by the end of June. Currently, it offers the technology in 275 markets, and needs only to retrofit six more to complete the circuit, so to speak. By the end of 2008, the company said, it will offer the technology in 350 U.S. markets.
High Speed Upload Packet Access complements High Speed Download Packet Access (HSDPA). When combined, the two technologies offer download speeds of 1.4 Mbits/s down and between 600 to 800 Kbits/s up, according to AT&T.
Obviously, both technologies are needed to enable a next-generation 3G iPhone, which has been rumored and rumored again to be due sometime in mid-June. Apple has stretched its inventory in the U.S., allowing just one iPhone to be sold per customer, and reports have circulated about iPhones selling out domestically and in the U.K. The hype machine is off and running, yet again.
