Since buying my first laptop three years ago, I've become an aficionado of all sorts of laptop stands, trying out a range of products from literal stands that elevate the keyboard, to flat platforms that keep your thighs from burnin' up. Most recently, I've been using the LapLogic Aerogel LapDesk, which comes in a regular and a wide versions, at home. Both models use a material called Aerogel, which is supposed to be the most effective insulator known to man. According to the website, this material has been used on the Mars Rover, and from what I hear, it's pretty darn hot (or is it cold?) in that part of the universe.
The wide model, pictured above, is like a mini desk giving you room for your laptop as well as a mouse or other materials you may need on hand. The smaller version, shown after the jump, is perfect when you just need your laptop. The verdict? After the jump. . .
In short: I love them! I especially enjoyed using the larger version as I frequently find myself perched on the couch typing away at my laptop while doing seven other things at the same time. During my testing I used the extra space on the LapDesk for a mouse, my TV remote, notebooks, and even a bowl of snacks. It's the ultimate tech couch potato accessory.
When I was more focused, I tried out the smaller LapDesk with equal success. Both LapDesks provide space underneath your laptop for ventilation as well as comfortable padding for your legs on the bottom. I also liked the non-slip surface which kept my laptop in place now matter how much I moved around. The Aerogel LapDesks are available in blue as well as grey with metallic gold. (Personally, I prefer the blue.) The Wide LapDesk goes for $79.95, while the Standard LapDesk is $69.95. Yes, the price may seem steep, but it's a durable enough product that you won't likely need to replace it anytime soon. If you're looking for a less expensive alternative, you can get the plastic LapWorks Futura for $29.95 or the more colorful Painted Futura for $49.95.
Laptop stands are not something you definitely need but they sure can make life easier. Perhaps someday laptop manufacturers will wise up and eliminate the need for these products, by, I don't know, making laptops that you can comfortably rest on your lap? Til then, this is a necessary stop-gap measure.
