Despite all the hype we've been hearing about GM's new two-mode hybrid cars, as part of the company's sudden change of heart about the environment, it turns out no one is actually buying them. AutoblogGreen reports that the sum total of hybrid sales for all models offered by GM in the first three months of 2008 was 843. "That is not a typo, it's 843. Unlike other manufacturers, GM has never broken out sales of hybrid models from conventional versions. Perhaps this is why."
During the same period, Ford sold over 5,000 Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, and Toyota has told tens of thousands of Priuses and Camry Hybrids. (Toyota sold over 180,000 Priuses in 2007, in fact.) This could be due to any number of reasons, such as dealers not pushing the cars hard enough, their cost being too high to begin with, or the simple fact that customers just don't care for tremendous hybrid SUVs—even ones that work well and average 20 mpg.
