zte-79.jpg Last week I said that if you want to look for new ideas from new entrants in the wireless world, keep your eyes on 1700 Mhz. That prediction is playing out, at least a little, this week at the CTIA Wireless trade show. Today ZTE announced two mid-range 1700 CDMA phones, the C78 and C79. The two new 1700 phones follow ZTE's first entry into the US market, the C88 phone with MetroPCS.

Now, neither of these phones are going to rock the cell-phone world. The C79, at left, has a 1.3-megapixel camera and the C78 is an even lower-end candy bar style phone. The news here is ZTE. They're a big Chinese manufacturing house and infrastructure company, and they're using the opportunities found in 1700 Mhz to break into the US market. With local heroes Motorola toppling like my two year old daughter's block tower, we need every new handset manufacturer we can get.

Expect to see the C78 and C79 showing up on Cricket or MetroPCS soon.
