This question for PC Magazine's lead analyst for printers and scanners, M. David Stone, came from reader Larry:

I have an HP 7130xi, which I bought at Costco several years ago. I don't print on it, and it's not even connected to a PC anymore. I use it for copying and faxing. I made the mistake a couple of years ago of buying a few ink cartridges, figuring I'd never need to buy any more. The other day I started getting messages that the color cartridge had expired, and because of this it wouldn't let me print with black ink. I tried putting in a "new" unopened color cartridge, but this made no difference.

I know this expiration stuff is a scam to make you buy more ink, so I Googled a bit and found a hack where you disconnect the motherboard battery for a bit (by sliding a credit card between it and the clip), and that made the expiration messages go away. But now it's telling me that my cyan print-head is bad. This appears to be a $33.99 item at Staples, and I'm disinclined to replace it, since I never print color with this stupid thing. And even if I replace it, I'm sure it will come up with some other reason why I need to buy more consumables.

If there's no way to make this HP unit behave, is there a good, cheap choice for me purely for very low-volume faxing and copying?

David's answer after the jump.

David replies:

First, for future reference, the expiration dates on ink cartridges are not a scam. Cartridges have a shelf life, just like milk: Leave them sitting around too long, and all sorts of things can go wrong with them--the colorants can come out of suspension leading to clogged nozzles, the adhesive that holds the case together can get dissolved into the ink and destroy the ink quality, and for cartridges that include the nozzles in the cartridge, the nozzles can get irretrievably clogged. As with milk, the dates are purposely conservative, so the cartridges are usually good for far longer than the expiration dates indicate. That's why some people have come to the erroneous conclusion that it's a scam, but, as you've discovered, cartridges do deteriorate over time.

Second (and also for future reference): With any ink jet printer, you have to print fairly frequently to keep ink from drying up in the system and clogging up the nozzles. You should make a point of printing at least one page a week. The Windows test page or a built-in test page will do. It just has to be something that spits some ink through all the nozzles.

The good news is that the print head may just have a bad electrical connection. The first thing I would do is reseat the print head. If that doesn't work, take a look at this page on the HP Web site for a possible fix by cleaning.

Finally, if that doesn't work, and you have to buy something, I'd suggest a mono laser AIO, since you don't need the color capability. My current favorite in this range is the Canon imageClass MF-4150, which shouldn't cost you much more than you probably paid for the HP. My second choice would be the imageClass MF4270, which is esentially the MF-4150 with a network connector added.

Make sure your copier was shipped and installed with the default-duplex, auto-off, and sleep mode features enabled. Some existing copiers can be reset to default duplexing. Turn off your copier at night if it does not have an auto-off feature; this will not shorten your copier's lifetime.Make fewer copies whenever possible by using electronic mail, posting documents on the Web, or by circulating a single copy. For originals with large print, use 2:1 image reduction to save paper.
