At Verizon's Open Devices conference, even the guest list was news. There's no guarantee that any of these firms are actually building new devices for Verizon, but they were clearly all interested in finding out whether the Big Red carrier's new "open" network would work for them. At the conference, I saw, among others:
- A large group of guys from Samsung. According to another conference attendee, they flew in from Korea just to attend the conference.
- Several executives from Nokia. Nokia's Seppo Aaltonen was carrying a stylish gray "Verizon / Nokia" backpack.
- Motorola.
- Kyocera.
- Toshiba. They don't make any handhelds for the US right now, but they have powerful devices in Japan.
- Ralph Heredia of ZipIt. They make a messaging device for tweens. He wasn't making any promises, but cellular connectivity seems like a natural for his gadget.
- Alcatel. They're a European cell phone company that's been trying to break into the US market for years.
- Disney.
- AOL.
- zzzPhone.
Wonder what they're all thinking of building? Leave your guesses in our comments.

Open??? Hell Verizon won't even let you use the features already built into the phones!!! (can I attach my phone to mobile phone tools or dataport... NO!!!) Why??? Because Verizon had the vendor lock out that feature!!! (as well as transfering pictures & such via bluetooth)
When contract is up... If they don't "unlock" these features... I will be moving on to a carier that will!
