NextEnergyNews reports that classic car company Morgan announced its vision of the car of the future at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show: emissions-free and running entirely on hydrogen. The Morgan LifeCar—so far, a vehicle that appears to exists only in drawings—"will use a hydrogen fuel cell to go from 0-60 mph in seven seconds up to a top speed of 90 mph," the report said. The cell has an estimated range of 200 miles—about 50 to 100 miles under the average gas-powered sports car. Still, the company plans some interesting technology under the car's distinctive bodywork.
The Morgan Lifecar will weigh only 1,540 pounds, according to the report. It will employ four separate electric motors—one at each wheel—and the wheels themselves will be 22 pounds lighter than conventional alloys. Significantly, the engines will regain 50 percent of power during braking, which the company claims is a huge improvement over the usual 10 percent figure. The design also uses a smaller fuel cell than earlier concepts, although NextEnergyNews notes that 200 miles per tank probably isn't sufficient for production.
