Pininfarina%20self-cleaning%20windshield.jpg

Wouldn't it be nice if your windshield could fend off precipitation and you could get rid of those drag-inducing wipers? That's the idea behind a concept vehicle developed by Pininfarina automotive designer Leonardo Fioravanti. Known as Hidra, the concept is built with windshields that repel water and dirt, making wipers a thing of the past.

The technology is achieved through a multilayer nanotech compound, which actually makes up the vehicle's windshield. According to CNET, the uppermost layer is composed of water-resistant titanium oxide, while the second "pushes dirt off to its sides, keeping the windshield clean." The third layer functions as a sensor, and the fourth layer controls the entire system via electrical induction.

The device is further explained in in the Italian publication, la Repubblica. Go here to learn more.
