Car and Driver has the scoop on the Saleen S5S Raptor Concept, the production version of which will fetch an estimated asking price of just $185,000—that's well down from the S7 Twin Turbo's base price of almost $600,000, so it qualifies as a genuine bargain. The designation "S5S" stands for "Saleen 5.0-liter supercharged," which in Saleen-speak means the Raptor is powered by an E85-burning, all-aluminum, 650-hp, 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 that puts out 630 pound-feet of torque, the report said.
The front brakes are of particular note, consisting of huge 15-inch discs with six-piston calipers; 13-inch discs and two-piston calibers work the rear wheels. Available options could consist of a six-speed paddle-shift sequential manual, aluminum and composite body panels, and a top speed over 200 mph. Zero to 60 mph would be accomplished in a claimed 3.2 seconds, and a quarter-mile snapped off in 10.9 seconds, according to the company. These are "figures that are awfully exact for a concept that the company isn't even sure it's going to produce," as C/D wryly notes, betting that since so much about this car is already set with such precision, Saleen will actually build the thing.
