When Activision announced Guitar Hero on Tour for the Nintendo DS, it seemed like the popular video game series had finally saturated every aspect of popular culture. Maybe the jump to portable gaming consoles doesn't seem that big a jump, but since its first iteration, Guitar Hero has seeped into our lives through some surprising conduits: from South Park episodes to Bill Gates's final CES keynote.
In fact, if you're a big enough fan, you can conceivably incorporate Guitar Hero into nearly every waking moment--in fact, why not pick up a Guitar Hero pillow for those deep R.E.M. cycles (see number 5 on our list below)?
When is enough too much? We're not here to pass judgment (well, except for that slightly sensational headline), but if you own more than, say, four or five of the below items, it may be time for you to consider a new hobby--or at least think about getting a little fresh air.

Air Guitar Rocker: I'm not going to suggest that everyone who plays Guitar Hero also does a little air-guitaring on the side, but let's just say that were one to create a Venn diagram of both groups, there would likely be a fair amount of overlap. Air Guitar Rocker is a Guitar Hero product in both naming and spirit, letting users rock out to tracks like "Smoke on the Water" even when there are no consoles to be found.

Caribiner: Bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase "keep it in your pants," this mini Guitar Hero-approved game should help with GH withdrawal during long train rides to work.

Gig Bag: Sure, protective cases for gadgets are nothing new--but when you start referring to GH sessions as "gigs," it might be time to take a deep breath and reconsider your priorities...

Guitar Hero III Mobile: Yet another way to help you get your fix on the road, this forthcoming cell phone game has been generating a fair amount of buzz.

Plush Guitar: Etsy seller PoisonHolly ensured that one quick Guitar Hero fan would have visions of fat riffs dancing in his or her head each night, with this handcrafted pillow. It was a one-of-a-kind item, but when I wrote this, there was already a follow-up Wii guitar for sale on her site.

Portable Turntable Controller: Rock and roll's dead anyway, right? This brilliant mod switches up Guitar Hero's ax for the wheels of steel.

React Guitar Stand: This one is for poseurs who actually put their axes down from time to time.

React Pedals: I feel like I shouldn't have to keep stressing this, but it's not a real guitar!

ShredMaster Jr.: Want to indoctrinate your kids into the church of rock 'n roll, but don't want to shell out all that money for a pricey console? This plug-and-play guitar comes stocked with such jams as "Iron Man" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

Thunderbox Amp 28r Amplifier: There's something strange about reading the words, "Also works with a real real electric guitar!" next to an ad for an amp.
March 22, 2008 12:03 PM
why not just get a real guitar and learn how to play it?
March 22, 2008 12:05 PM

March 22, 2008 12:14 PM
Thats just pathetic. Who would ever bye such things. Isnt the game enough?!?
March 22, 2008 12:15 PM
Would naming your controller be taking it too far as well? Cause I have a friend who has names for all three (count them, three) controllers.
And by friend, I mean ACTUAL friend, not some guy who's too embarrassed to admit he likes guitar hero.
March 22, 2008 12:15 PM
Yes... I hate every incarnation of this game. Instead of spending all this time playing a game like this, people should pick up a real guitar!
March 22, 2008 12:15 PM
now i feel bad for playing rock band online all weekend XP
March 22, 2008 12:15 PM
WOW!

March 22, 2008 12:18 PM
Thank you. My thought is if you really want to be a "guitar hero" - go to a pawn shop - buy an old Telecaster and learn to play. Jeez.
March 22, 2008 12:18 PM
IT's NOT A real Guitar!!!
I think it would be great to go to the next step, A real guitar that you could interact with and learn how to play for real !

I am torn about this game. I like fact that it could get our younger generations interested in shredding. I think the real thing is what they need however.
March 22, 2008 12:19 PM
Those accessories are awesome! Although, I LOVE Guitar Hero, I do not own any of these. Its nice to know that based off of this list, I do actually get outside every once in a while. So, Thanks

11. You currently own all GH games (GH I, GH II, GH encore :rock the eighties, GH III) and you have pre-ordered/reserved GH: Aerosmith.
March 22, 2008 12:21 PM
Wow.
I am stunned.
If one invested that amount of time and money into a real instrument.....need I say more?
I chose the 'real thing'!
Good luck all you hero's out there!

I'm 19 years old, I've played GH before and I'm not too impressed. Something about just pressing 5 keys to the same old songs gets boring for me in about 1 hour. I can play that game on medium though. Rock Band is much more enjoyable, because you and 3 friends can play it together, though I only play that about once a month. People need to experience and remeber what going outside and playing baseball, street hockey and water gun fights were like. Its sad to think the youngest of kids today will most likely never know what it is to do stuff like that everyday because video games have taken over child hood.
March 22, 2008 12:23 PM
i think all this stuff about guitar hero has kinda gone over bored but i play too and i love it i play for hours but i also get out and play for hours so ...ya......... Rock on guitar hero 4 EVER
March 22, 2008 12:24 PM
i think the game is awsome I can do easy and medium but that is it!!!!!!!!i still love the game tho!!!
March 22, 2008 12:24 PM
Brian,
Stop hating man. It's not a real guitar but its fun to pretend to be able to play one. Who hasn't ever wanted to be a musician?
I bet if you were the inventor of the game, you wouldn't be complaining since you'd be filthy $$$$$.
March 22, 2008 12:24 PM
i'm a big guitar fan but..... i do not own guitar hero if you do and you take it to this exstreme , maybe you should invest in some real equipment
March 22, 2008 12:24 PM
Who cares that people play Guitar Hero too much? I mean, at least it has you up and doing something like the wii does.
World of Warcraft is what some people need to worry about. It has some people/slugs sitting at their computer moving little more than their hands for 8+ hours a day!

March 22, 2008 12:26 PM
How is playing guitar hero like playing an actual guitar? and to play air-guitar off guitar hero ?LMAO!!! guitar hero is just a gameboy in the shape of a guitar for nerds who want to play the guitar but dont know how to, at best.
March 22, 2008 12:26 PM
This is just a game for people who can't play real guitar, and think they can

March 22, 2008 12:27 PM
I'll just quote what everybody already knows:
With the amount of time ut into playing a video game simulation of playing a guitar, you could spend it playing a real instrument.
In fact, you could create your OWN songs, possibly start a band, get those creative juices flowings, and not hit timed sounds of "guitar simulation". You're not really playing the song!
On the other hand, it is fun. Guitar Hero helps with corrdination and rhythm, and it makes an excellent party game.
Now, back to criticism. Did you know that Konami created a guitar simulation game 10 years ago called Guitar Freaks? Did you know that it's still very popular in Japanese arcades and game counsels?
Did you also know that some Guitar Freaks arcade cabinets made their way to the U.S?
March 22, 2008 12:27 PM
I think people need to start getting an actuall life.
or at least think about getting a little fresh air. Like they said.

If there is one thing I've learned about making money is once you've found a good thing to sell, keep em coming back. Naturally video games are addicting, it's an escapism for a lot of us, but guitar hero is the escapism for people who've always wanted to play but don't want to spend hundreds of dollars. Granted if you've never owned a PS2 or 3 and wanted to play, yes it would cost hundreds of dollars but that's besides the point.
Also, it is always a choice on how deep you want to go into the escapism. If getting a plushie is what you want, who's to stop you? When we purchase something or get a gift from a loved one who's concern is it of the public?
Let me know when it gets twisted. Like sexual pleasure, murders, or anything of the such, then repost this article. People like the game, personally I love the game, but this isn't any more news than if someone wrote up an article saying the sky is blue.
March 22, 2008 12:35 PM
I think this is a retarded game. The same songs over and over until you can hit every color without looking? STUPID! If you can spend that amount of time on a game that gets you nowhere in life, why not play the real thing and learn something you can really get into and enjoy. GH/What a waste of life...
March 22, 2008 12:38 PM

As a "real guitarist" I have had a lot of laughs from this whole craze. The best part is that it seems some delusional addicts believe they are actually playing an instrument.

March 22, 2008 12:49 PM
1."Rock and roll's dead anyway, right?..."
Rock and roll is not dead! Rock and roll kills rap no question.
2. No one who plays Guitar Hero even has that gig bag, I guarentee you.
3. Air guitaring is something everyone does. As long as there's a kick ass guitar lick in the background, it's totally normal. If you're doing with no guitar in the background, kill yourself.
4. The react pedals are for people who don't have time to use the whammy bar, and for people who mess up when they raise the guitar to deploy star power. The guitar hero controller is indeed not a real guitar, therefore, the pedals are not real pedals! Read the "whammy bar" and "star power" labels before you start being stupid.
5. I agree with you on the Thunderbox Amp 28r Amplifier is profound. I think they sold 2 or so.
Please kill yourself for making this post.

I'm not sure all the accessories constitutes a Guitar Hero addiction, as much as just liking to buy stuff. As far as additiction, I work with true Guitar Hero addicts, so here are my signs of addiction, based on my observations...10:You talk about what songs would be good on GH; 9:You scoff at anyone who hasn't at least tried it; 8:You play GH while singing to it on a karaoke mike; 7:You compare your scores/levels at work; 6:You practice nightly; 5:You bring it along to every party you're invited to; 4:Even a baby shower! 3:You talk smack to anyone whose score is lower than yours; 2:Scold the UPS deliever guy for interrupting your practice; and the number ONE sign you're addicted to GH...You've asked the school to have a fund raiser to purchase it for P.E. class to improve hand/eye coordination.

This is totally funny... i play guitar hero from time to time but...this is just crazy. These things are for two kinds of people: people who have no lives or friends or those who have to many friends that obsess about guitar hero that they obsess about it too.LOL.

Kids. Tell your parents to stop being cheap and buy you a real guitar and lessons. Parents, while many video games are actually great in many ways, this is not one of them. If your kid wants to play music, make them learn the right way instead of giving in to one more thing that will enable to spend even more time getting fat and useless on the couch.

I wonder if GH will compel users to pick up a real instument, of if it helps those that are musicians keep tempo. The cool idea, I think, is to convert a computer keyboard to a piano keyboard where letters flashed on the screen will play notes.

You are too in to it when you have perfect on "Expert" mode

No wonder we will take your country without firing a shot. Soft amerikan men let their women fight their wars while they play like children at silly games.

Wow. Just wow. Some of the stuff doesn't suprise me (like the cell phone game) but the amp is too much.
When did Guitar Hero become more popular than DDR? That was a dark day.

This game has definitely taken it's target market by storm. I am proud to say, that I am one of the few people who does not own any guitar hero merchandise. I will admit though, after making fun of the whole concept of it, I tried playing the demo @ a local Best Buy, and it was kind of fun.. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.. That was as far as I would go. They might as well release heroin hero like they did in South Park because this Guitar Hero addiction, is about as bad as a drug addiction; Only worse though, because kids' parents buy it for them, lol.

I don't know about anybody else's addiction but I could really, REALLY go for one of those hand-held versions of the game.
My name is Draggon and I'm a Guitar Hero Addict.

some of this stuff is cool and can be used with some sanity. all of my friends play guitar hero and some of us are really good at it, pwning jordon on expert good. but we also all play real instruments, have a real band, and spend more time playing guitar than guitar hero. but thats no reason not to get a few mobile versions and some sweet accessories, just like any video game

As a musician who had to learn the hard way(on a real
instrument)and after years on practice to attain a level of proficiency GH is an insult to anyone who can play. IT'S ONLY A TOY!! YOU ARE NOT REALLY PLAYING A GUITAR!!!!!!!!!!
March 22, 2008 1:05 PM
I would have to make the suggestion that if people are willing to sink that much time into a psuedo-guitar game, why not get a real guitar? Then they can become real Guitar Heroes, or at least more of a guitar hero than someone playing a game.

This game is the biggest waste of time and money, the price of this plastic junk is the same as buying the real thing. Kids these days need to learn and open their minds to real things and not this bull video game crap. Teach your kids something that will help them open their minds and not something that will eat their brain away. I thank my mother everyday for buying me my first guitar when I was 8, it changed my life! why dont u save your money and spend it on something that will help your child in the future!!!
