suncom.jpg Now that T-Mobile has closed their purchase of SunCom, they now cover 259 million people, up from 244 million. Interestingly from a technical perspective, this also means that T-Mobile is no longer a 1900 Mhz-only carrier. SunCom, which covered the Carolinas, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and parts of Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia, also had some coverage on the 850 Mhz band, according to T-Mobile.

Almost all phones sold in the US for US customers have both the 850 and 1900 Mhz bands, but some foreign imported phones don't. This purchase just makes it clearer that if you want your phone to have the best possible coverage in the US, you need both 850 and 1900 Mhz on board.

Curious to see what T-Mobile's coverage map looks like now that SunCom is being absorbed? Take a look after the jump. Sure, it still isn't Verizon or AT&T, but their position in the Southeast just got a heck of a lot stronger.

T-Mobile's native coverage is in blue on this map. Green areas are roaming, where T-Mobile phones work but people can't sign up for new T-Mobile accounts.

Note: Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are not shown.

Suncom's coverage here in Puerto Rico is NOT good. So this purchase doesn't make me want to go out and get T-Mobile...

What does T-Mobile is doing to compete with the big ones here in Puerto Rico? I am one of those that will be ready to move to T-Mobile if the signal gets better than Claro and Centennial. In order to do that you will have to install more antennas. I hope so!

My sister works at suncom and she told me that T Mobile finished the antennas installation in Puerto Rico additional to the suncom ANTENNAS so that really means that T mobile would have very good signal in PR with the latest technology.

Well yesterday T-Mobile change the MNC (SunCom Alpha Tag) and replace it with USA T-Mobile Tag). About T-mobile finishing installing more antennas, I don't think T-Mobile has finished installing more antennas, they will keep improving Suncom signal until the end this year and part of the next year.
