A few weeks ago, Tesla Motors announced that it raised an additional $40 million in capital from Silicon Valley investors, according to a Bloomberg article. That cash infusion should enable product of the all-electric, $100k Tesla Roadster to begin in March. That's also on top of the $100 million investors such as Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin already gave the company. But a second report mentions something else: Tesla is also building a four-door sedan.
In an interview with Wired magazine, Darryl Siry, Tesla's VP of marketing, sales and service, said that the company is serious about building a sedan. The second car originally had an internal codename of "WhiteStar," but is now, imaginatively, just referred to as the "sedan."
Siry said that Tesla Motors spent 18 months developing the car and has the powertrain "pretty much nailed." Current plans are that there will be two versions of the sedan: a full-on electric version for about $70K, and a range-extended hybrid setup (similar to the Chevrolet Volt) for about $50K, according to the report. Tesla will unveil a design concept by the end of June and a prototype of the sedan by the end of 2008.
Meanwhile, the Roadster is right on schedule, with all 600 examples for 2008 spoken for. Tesla Motors plans to build 1,800 cars for the 2009 model year. However, the report said it's likely the company will take all of this year and part of next to finish building the 2008 cars first.
