iphoneq.jpg The iPhone SDK, the software developer's kit which was supposed to open up Apple's iPhone to true third party applications, was supposed to come out in February, according to an announcement by Steve Jobs all the way back in October.

Last week, murmurs started going around that the SDK will be late. Arik Hesseldahl at Business Week started the ball rolling, and he's since been followed by Erica Sadun at TUAW.

I'll add my own source to the mix. This weekend I talked to someone who's in touch with several internal Apple developers, who said that the SDK will be late by at least a week, "because they're perfectionists." I spent all last week trying to get some word about the SDK out of Apple, but their official spokespeople are ignoring any questions about the SDK, which isn't a very good sign.

Enterprising developers have been writing native applications for the iPhone for a while, and it's a great platform - essentially, a 600 Mhz PC running a version of Apple's OS X. Unfortunately, to run any of those applications, you need to hack your iPhone in a way that endangers its stability when you run Apple's software updates. I'll post my questions and worries about the SDK in a separate post here in Gearlog.

I love how 1 stupid site (businessweek) posts about the SDK being delayed and the whole world believes it. This is all rumor but I guess thats how Apple customers get there news cause no one at Apple ever comments. I love my iphone but I hate the way Apple deals with its news and customers.

Yeah I agree with u... I dont understand y apple cant just gives us updates as to when it will come out or some type of info every once and awhile... You would think they should have maybe a countdown to the release to examplify the excitement somewhat.. But no they keep everything a scret and never let any of there customers know anything... I do luv my phone.. my first 3 did have issues so now i am on my 4th... but as long as they do a super job on this new update and sdk program then i wont complain.. if it is some super controlled update allowing certain programs and so on then i hope everyone complains at them... This phone could be way way better and i dont understand y tehy dont make it that way.. how hard could it be to add some things such as video, mms, forwarding and so on... even my sister who got a FREE PHONE from atat had VIDEO AND ALL THAT... and we pay a few hundred bucks and dont get it.. that doesnt make sense at all...

The iphone is overpriced. The consumer is basically paying just for the style. The only thing interesting is the touch screen which no longer new. Other phones like to nokia N82 or N95 is way way better and within the price range.

this is just like the tinycode incident, one website posts something and the whole internets believes it. And everybody claims that they have their own inside source. Any post that I hear that says they have an inside source, i'm skeptic. So on the 26th apple will announcence the sdk, and business week will lose all credibility.

agree with epgomez. I had an iphone, and switched to the Nokia N95 US version. Apple needs to learn from Nokia and open its platforms right from the beginning. iPhone was a great ipod+phone, but the N95 is a truly useful multimedia device, with thousands of 3rd party apps to choose from

I too am skeptical about newsweeks "unnamed source" with unnamed reasons fit delay. This is going out on a limb, but I can see apple doing some like "leap-year keynote" thing.

and as to the authors comments, of course apple doesn't say anything. They never do. Did you really expect them to change their minds just for you? And I would be skeptical anyway seeing as in your article the picture of the iPhone you use is before you-tube became and app and as you can see says Cingular where the service is. My, what an official, up-to-date site you run!
