Motor Trend is reporting that Toyota will present two dedicated hybrid models at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit: one a Toyota and the other a Lexus. The Toyota is widely expected to be the third-generation of the now-iconic Prius. But it turns out the new Lexus hybrid won't be another $100K sedan or $40K crossover. According to unnamed sources, this time it's going to be a "lifestyle wagon-like vehicle" that's based on that same third-generation Prius platform and drivetrain.
What's confusing about this report is that it's at odds with what Toyota general manager Bob Carter said in an AdAge interview last week. He had said that while Toyota sold a record 181,000 Prius cars in the United States in 2007, there's no way they can repeat that kind of year-over-year growth—67 percent—despite the demand for the car, presumably due to production limitations.
