Have an old favorite Xbox game that hasn't yet been made compatible with the Xbox 360? Well, you might be out of luck. Kotaku broke the bad news that the backward compatibility updates for the Xbox 360 are winding down.

According to Albert Penello, group marketing manager for the Microsoft Xbox 360, the November update to the list of original Xbox games to be made playable on the 360 could be the last. The total number of games is 465, which is pretty impressive, but it is a far cry from Sony's near 100% compatibility between PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games.

Microsoft has noted that the number of "classic" games being played on Xbox Live is fairly low. Penello noted that beyond Halo 2, most gamers might not be interested in playing these older titles. We knew Microsoft pretty much dumped the Xbox as soon as the Xbox 360 arrived, but now it seems that many of the older games for the system are dead and buried too.

I love the it mentions the compatibility between PlayStation 1 and 2, but forget to mention 3 and its new inability to play old games. Sounds like they are trying to bash Microsoft when they did a great job of get most old games to play. Its been 3 years, let it go. If you are still trying to play Chronicles of Riddick on your 360, why did you even get one.

Why does everyone bring up Riddick when discussing Xbox 360 backwards-compatability?

There is already going to be a Riddick remake for the 360 and PS3 (DUH!).

Yeah, I would guess most 360 owners don't play many old Xbox games on their systems, but you can't blame them since the 360 already has hundreds of top-quality games.

And if people didn't really care about backwards compatability, how do you explain the success of the Wii's Virtual Console? Being able to download classic games on the Wii is a genius idea. (though, technically that's called emulation, but who's being technical about it?).

Well, it seems not everyone cares about the old games. But I for one don't want to buy an old xbox just to play a couple older games, and I never owned a xbox 1, I figure the 360 will eventually play any halfways worthwhile xbox game and then some, just a matter of waiting long enough, but now I hear they might be scrapping that concept of backwards compatibility?

I bought the ps3 as well, and I got an early model specifically so I could play older ps2 and maybe a couple ps1 games without keeping my ps2 around. The 360 is cool, but we should really have the option of still playing all the games we already own.

Also, and perhaps most importantly, Microsoft owns both the xbox and xbox 360 and all accompanying hardware and software for the systems, so I fail to understand what the issue is, when they already know everything there is to know about both systems? It should be relatively easy for them to make one perfect emulator for the system....no copyright violations involved to circumvent either so it should be easy. anyways thats enough longwinded one sided discussion for all two people who read this :P I'm like 2 months late for the discussion.... Later and I hope Microsoft picks up again like they originally promised and follows through, even if not immediately.

Everyone here seems to have alot of disposable income. I waited to get my xbox until it was about $150 and only made the move to 360 when the original died (on its second dvd drive). I buy mostly used games and do not want to spend $50 for a game. The backward compatibility is helpfull because I have old games that I still like and the money I put into them isn't wasted.

If you aren't concerned about showing everyone that you have the latest and greatest, three years is not that long.

BTW, Charles, I read somewhere that Microsoft does not own some certain software or something in xbox that was developed by an outside contractor.

On the xbox website it still says they want to make all the old games compatible. Of course, this message is also dated November 2007. Me thinks they should take a minute to update their website.

Damn straight. I think it's garbage that MS is flagging out on backwards compatibility. There are classic games out there that are just that, "classics" and I don't feel that I should have to buy the 360 version after paying for the original. Buyback or straight up trade should be offered. Scammed!
