Among other things, 2008's CES will be remembered as the year in which fake guitar playing became, well, at least semi-legitimized. Among countless Guitar Hero spinoffs and accessories, and that now-infamous Bill Gates keynote, the true rock stars at this year's show aren't the visiting professional musicians, but rather the fully amateur wielders of plastic peripherals. Of course, the enablers of honest-to-god music-makers came on strong at this year's show as well. Take Gibson's self-tuning guitar, which has proved one of the biggest hits of the show thus far.

It's hard to say whether this was intentional, but like Guitar Wizard before it, SoundTech's Guitar Home Theater Interface effectively treads the line between the two worlds, catering to professional musicians while adding an element of living room entertainment.

Showcased at last night's ShowStoppers event, the device plugs into a home stereo and gives guitar players the ability to play directly through their home stereos. The input device features an automatic tuner (not a Gibson automatic, but still), reverb with delay adjustment, and effects like distortion. Users can also plug an MP3 player into the device and jam along to music through the stereo.

The Home Theater Interface will be available on June 1, with an MSRP of $99.99, through retail channels and SoundTech's site.

can't you do the same thing with a Line6 POD, or a Digitech pedal? This doesn't seem to be anything particulary groundbreaking.

It's the ease of use and price point that makes this gadget remarkable.
