The high-tech clothing company Scottevest is quickly ascending to the top of the heap for geek fashion. Its line features weather-resistant clothes with tons of hidden pockets and routing for your headphone or earbud cables.
One of the items in their latest line is the Classic Travel Vest ($100). The vest is designed to eliminate the bulky look of a vest with large exterior pockets for your cell phone, PDA, iPod, wallet, etc. The vest has 22 hidden pockets, as well as a key holder, bottle holder, and magnetic pocket closures.
I gave the Travel Vest a quick test run. First of all, the vest feels sturdier and more substantial than it looks in the catalog photo. Though it looks like a thin-shell windbreaker, it actually has a thick-ish interior lining and the outer is treated with Teflon to resist water and stains (though I didn't test this with rain or mustard). Overall, the vest felt good and the pocket designs are clever.
I was concerned initially by the pockets' magnetic closure system. I wondered whether putting a device with a magnetic hard drive or something that uses magnetic tape may be affected by the jacket's magnets. The company assured me, however, that it has done extensive testing and found no ill effects to the gadgets. One additional note on the magnets is that they may affect pacemakers, so check with your doc before buying.
There are two headphone cable routing systems--one internal and the other consisting of small Velcro tabs (or speed releasers) that you put the wire through. To avoid having to wire and rewire the vest with your headphones every day, you should probably have an extra pair you use only with the vest.
Overall, the Travel Vest seems to be a solid product, and I'm curious to see where Scottevest goes as their clothing becomes more fashionable--and not just for geeks and golfers.
