OWC%20Axiotron%20Modbook%20mac%20tablet.JPGOne of the stars of last year's MacWorld (besides the iPhone, of course) was the OWC Modbook, a third-party modified Apple Macbook that the company converted into a tablet -- a product that, as of 8:47 AM PDT on Jan. 15 2008, Apple isn't offering. The device is actually manufactured, or converted, by Axiotron.

OWC said that the company is offering an improved version of the tablet in time for the MacWorld 2008 show, which opens today. The upgrades include built-in GPS, which includes the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) for improved accuracy.

The OWC-Axiotron Modbook comes in two flavors. The cheaper $2,279 model includes a 2.0-GHz Core 2 Duo chip and a 80-Gbyte, 5,400-RPM hard drive and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive. The slightly more expensive $2,479 model includes a 2.2-GHz Core 2 Duo chip and a 120-Gbyte hard drive, plus a double-layer SuperDrive.

The Modbook is better than ever today, benefiting from the latest, higher performance Apple MacBook base platform - Apple Leopard 10.5 OS - and new Axiotron Modbook Tablet features including standard inclusion of built in GPS.

Each tablet includes:

  • Mac OS X Leopard
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
  • Built-in iSight
  • Apple Remote
  • Wireless 802.11b/g/n & Bluetooth
  • 1.0GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
  • AnyView 13.3" Wide Screen
  • ForceGlass™ Screen & Camera Cover
  • WACOM Penabled® Digitizer
  • 512 Levels of Pressure Sensitivity
  • Axiotron Digitizer Pen
  • WAAS enabled GPS Built-In

Oh snap - they're going to start shipping now? Rumors of an ultralight MacBook or a Mac tablet at this year's Macworld must have taken root over at OWC!

When will the rest of the world catch up the Mac? This is just another example of Mac innovation at it's finest! I bet we'll be seeing PC clones soon enough. I loathe how they all try to be like the Mac.

Please tell me that was sarcasm, Mark.

Yeah - don't get me wrong, I love me some Apple, but that was a little over the top!
