One brisk glance is enough to recognize that Lexus LF-A concept represents a clear and definitive break from the brand's traditional 'stagnant luxury' approach. From its lightweight carbon-fiber and aluminum body to the "front-mid" powertrain configuration, the FL-A is destined for thrill seekers with a penchant for style.
With an obvious affront to the likes of Aston Martin DB-9 and Ferrari 599 GTB Fioriano, LF-A's styling is distinctly 'Lexus'. Yet under the hood it is anything but. The paddle controlled transaxle modulates the front-mid engine via a torque tube and propeller shaft for added performance, drivetrain rigidity and reduced vibration. Meanwhile, the track-tested 500 horsepower 5.0L V10, capable of speeds greater than 200 mph, is sure to make even the upcoming Nissan GT-R shrug in embarrassment.
This is not the first time Toyota designers at the Lexus division put out a premium sports vehicle based on the "Circle-F" architecture. But this time the groundbreaking LF-A interpretation of the supercar will take on a roadster form. I can only hope that this concept's journey from the 2008 North American International Auto Show to the production line will be as swift as its feat at the Fuji Speedway circuit.
