Lincoln_MKT_concept.jpg DETROIT--This is a show where I could almost as easily pick the top 10 theme colors as the top 10cars. Let's start with the colors, then see the slideshow for the 10 most important cars and technologies of Detroit's North American International Auto show. The colors:
  • Green. The official color of the Detroit auto show this year with all the hybrids and electric vehicles.
  • Blue. The color chosen as emblematic of low-emissions diesel engines, most commonly called BlueTec (Mercedes-Benz and others) as well as Advanced Blue (BMW).
  • Gray. The sky: January. Detroit. What did you expect? Detroit and LA both used to have auto shows in January, LA moved to November, Detroit should have instead.
  • White. But only for the one day it snowed, and then just an inch or two, not enough to cause flashbacks to 1999 when early arrivals were stranded in Motown and couldn't get out.
  • Red. The financial ink color for the traditional U.S. based automakers, which saw industry sales slip 1 million units last year and the same might happen again in 2008. At the show, lots of people laughed on the outside.
  • Brown. The leave-behinds when 120 cattle and 16 horses parade in front of Detroit's Cobo Center in support of a Dodge pickup truck rollout. This was not the zero-emissions part of the show.
  • Chocolate. One of the hottest paint colors, whether chocolate, hot chocolate (photo above), cocoa, or cocoa metallic, accounting for up to a quarter of the sales on some models.
  • Red and gold. China's colors, for the half-dozen PRC automakers coming to America. (Also one of the interior/exterior color combinations of a Chinese prototype car.)
OK, make that top eight colors. Click onward to see the top 10 cars and technologies of the Detroit auto show.
