Apple iPod Touch

On the advice of a PC Magazine staffer (yes, I mean you, T.G.), I bit the bullet: After updating iTunes and the software on my iPod Touch, I ordered the January Software Update from Apple last Friday--though I resented paying $20 for something that new Touch owners are getting for free. Then, to add insult to injury, nothing seemed to download. Though iTunes indicated that all my purchases had been downloaded, no new apps appeared on my Touch as promised.

I e-mailed Apple's support line last night, and am still waiting for a response. A search revealed that many other people have had similar problems. It turns out that, while I was away for the weekend, Apple added download and installation instructions for the Software Update on its Web site. It appears that at least some of the problem cases are when people have manually synced their iPods (true in my case) that were initially synced with another iTunes library (not true for me). The solution is to uncheck Manually Manage Music and Video and re-sync your Touch, and incidentally, erase all the contents of the iPod.

I'll try this when I get home, and let you know if it works. Even if it does, it's a big hassle just to complete the installation of a piece of software that a lot of current Touch owners downloaded begrudgingly and reluctantly in the first place.

Well, the fix worked. It turned out that iTunes saw my Touch as having been "initially synced with another iTunes library"--it was the same library, but a few months ago I had to reinstall iTunes, so apparently it saw it as a different one. I disabled "Manually Manage Music and Video" and adjusted my music setting so it would erase all music rather than try to fill the Touch with more music than it would fit, and synced it. Nothing. But after turning the Touch off and then on again, it re-synced, and this time I saw the Software Upgrade appear on the iPod Touch summary screen in iTunes--and when the sync was done, the magic icons appeared on my Touch. Now I get to load my Touch with music from scratch.

Just think if this was a Microsoft product. People would be yelling and screaming about how evil Microsoft is etc etc. It's an Apple product and you barely hear a whisper. At least Tony had the courage to post this. But don't worry Tony you'll be hearing from the Mac faithfull soon. I mean how dare you say anything bad about an IPOD.

The Touch is actually my first Apple product, and apart from this glitch is magnificent as a music player/video and photo viewer. The new Maps feature is great (particularly useful now that more and more highway rest stops/service areas are offering free WiFi). The weather feature is feeble, just giving you the current temperature, the day's high and low temperature, and an icon for sunny/cloudy/rain/snow, etc. + predicted temperatures for today and the next 5 days, but with no text explanation. The stock feature works fine--that is, if you enjoy watching your net worth plummet into the abyss. I see that Apple's stock is down nearly 15% today. Haven't tried the other new features yet.

Apple products (including macs) remind me of Fords from the 70s. Very flashy and sporty out of the the show room. But only a 12000 mile warrenty and then they die at 12001 miles and your out of luck.

@elburro: If it were a Microsoft product, he'd still be waiting to hear back from product support. Assuming they didn't make him call a toll line or pay up front for the "privilege" of customer service. ;)

BTW, I did get an e-mail from Product Support this morning, at 1:07 a.m. New York time, which would make it 10:07 p.m. in Cupertino (well within the 48-hour period they promised, though after I'd found the solution elsewhere). Among the links they'd provided was the one I'd previously found in the Apple Forum, which provided the solution. They also re-uploaded the software update to my account. Along with the info on phone tech-support, they do say that "there may be a fee associated with the call."

My ipod touch is a brick. Update 1.1.3 killed it. Dont do it until Apple gets sorted.

I never could get the January update to install on my ipod touch. Apple had to refund my $20. This is my first Apple product and I will NEVER purchase another thing from them. Their support is really poor. It's no wonder they have such a short return policy. Everyone would take it back otherwise. Pretty sad.

that is such a ripoff and hassle that's why I don't buy the January update
