Over at Wired, there's a profile of Nintendo game designer, Yoshiaki Koizumu. Koizumi, who joined the company in 1991, as part of the Legend of Zelda team, recently served as the director on Nintendo's utterly sublime Super Mario Galaxy.

As the title of the piece implies, the most fascinating aspect is not the insight on Koizumu, but rather the light it sheds on the company's longstanding in-house genius, Shigeru Miyamoto, the man who launched his career in 1981, as a designer on Donkey Kong, and has since come to be regarded as the industry's most brilliant mind, having given birth to such incalculably influential franchises as Mario and Zelda.

"None of Miyamoto's sentences have subjects," Koizumi tells Wired, citing an example of his boss's non-traditional approach to game design and communication in general. "So you have to rely on context. It gets to the point where Miyamoto will give us feedback, and the only person who has any idea what it means is me. And everyone else who is CC'ed on these emails have absolutely no idea what he is talking about."

After a decade and a half spent working beneath him, Koizumu has become something of a translator for Miyamoto who is spread much thinner than he was in those heady days of the early-to-mid 80s. "I feel like he's making us work to solve these puzzles on purpose, because it's a process that unlocks the creativity on our side," says Koizumu, adding, "I'm getting pretty good at it."
