SideShow, one of several often discussed but never released Vista-only extras, is getting closer to release. Ikanos Consulting has been working on a new version of the software, which allows small external screens to connect to and display content from a PC, for handhelds based on the popular Windows Mobile 6 platform. But surprise! The company's Go Gadgets for Windows Mobile software will also run the iPod, as evidenced by these leaked screen shots of the latest beta version.
Why, dear god why, you may be asking? Good question. Well, there's many different Web applications already accessible through Safari for use the iPod Touch or iPhone. But most of them give you access to data online or let you play games. Imagine using your iPhone as a remote control for Media Center instead. It's like adding extra functionality to your device, not just adding an extra game. Needless to say, you'll need Windows Vista to make it work.
Ikanos Consulting plans to have the software ready by the end of January, ostensibly for free, public consumption. UPDATE: Ikanos emailed to note that it's likely this version won't be free, though a version of the software for the Windows Mobile platform may be. You can join the beta program now, however, by emailing the company for a download link.
