This question from reader Scott Clendaniel arrived for SmartDeviceCentral editor Jamie Lendino:

I read your review before buying the LG Rumor. I just bought it yesterday and your review was dead on. In fact, I love the phone. Best and easiest to use I have had in a long time, except for one thing that I was wondering if you could help me with.

I have an iMac and I am trying to copy some of my music and possibly an audio book onto my Rumor using Bluetooth. My iMac keeps telling me there is an error, and nothing gets sent. I was able to send my contacts and a calender from my phone to my Mac with total ease, but I am having trouble going the other way with music. In your article, you mentioned that you could play music from iTunes. How did you get iTunes stuff to your phone?

Thanks. I really appreciate your help. Keep writing. Love your reviews. They're always spot on.

Jamie's answer after the jump.

Thanks for the kind words--I really appreciate it. I usually bypass the sync and just use a microSD card to transfer music when testing phones. That was what I did in the LG Rumor review--I have a test suite full of music file formats that I pop in and listen to.

Lately, my favorite way to move data back and forth between a computer without a card reader and a cell phone is the Kingston Mobility Kit.
It lets you transfer files to and from the included 1GB microSD card via your computer's USB port, and it also has mini and full-size SD sleeves if you find a PC with a card reader. I've
seen it for $37 on Amazon.

If you already have an external card reader for your iMac, you can just buy any microSD card that comes with the sleeves (such as this $25 2GB card). Pop it into its full-size SD sleeve, and then insert that in your PC's card reader. The LG Rumor supports up to 4GB microSD cards, but not microSDHC cards. Hope this helps.

Hi Scott, presumably you're using the send file option under the bluetooth menu bar icon on the Mac. Make sure; you're able to browse recognisable folders on the phone from the Mac as some may not be accessible, that you agree to receive the file when the phone asks you, you have enough space on the phone.

Sorry if this is a bit obvious but it's quite common. If you have no joy there's an excellent support discussion group at www.apple.com/support

Good luck, McD

Hi, I'm having problems transferring music to my phone also. I've connected the microSD card directly to my computer using a microSD adapter. I tried to drag my music directly to the microSD card but all it says is, "The card is not ready." Why is this?

Can you elaborate on your reply a bit? I am able to transfer files to my microSD card (to the 'media' folder I created) and the Rumor recognizes the .MP3 files but it did not recognize the .WMA files. The manual implies that the following file formats are supported: MP3, WMA, MP4 and WAV (at least these are the formats supported by Sprint's Music Manager). What file formats have you tested and were there any extra steps required to get the phone to recognize them?

Okay, so I just got a Sprint Rumor phone and I love it. My only problem is that I can't seem to figure out how to use pictures from a memory card as my background picture... and I can't figure out how to organize the folders on the memory card. I can create a new folder but I can't move my pictures to them... can anyone help? Please?

I just bought a Motorola S9 bluetooth stereo headset for use with my LG Rumor. After pairing the device, I still can't hear the music when using the Media Player to play my mp3 files. The headset works fine for calls, just not the music. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have the same frustrating problem! I bought the Motorola S9 for the LG Rumor, but I can nit play music over the S9. Phone calls work just fine, but I can not play the music over the S9. Is this phone even capable of playing music over bluetooth. No one seems to know the answer. Help...anyone know???

It appears that this phone cannot play music over the bluetooth connection. The text editing software on this phone is also very disappointing, lacking any kind of basic copy/cut/paste functionality or the ability to delete more than one character at a time. Is it possible that LG could issue a software update to correct these problems?

Ok I work for a cell company and here are a few tips:
1. Format the memory card in the phone before putting music on it
2. Music tends to show up when it is in mp3 format
3. I don't believe the ux260 is "stereo" bluetooth capable, meaning: it won't work with the s9
Hope this helps

Does anyone know how to organize the music on the LG Rumor? Can it be done or is the music listed in alphabetical order (in my case it goes by each number of the track) always? I would like to organize it by album. Help would be greatly appreciated.

First time here, felt obligated to respond, as I've stumbled across some of these issues as well. I just purchased this phone yesterday and discovered today, that if you have a microSD card, first put it in the phone, then either attached it to the computer or remove it from the phone and put it in the sleeve adapter and attached it to the computer via USB port. There will be several folders already established on the card for use in the phone. If you want the music to show up in the music player, put the files under My Music. If you want to be able to use them as a ringtone, put the files under Audio. This allows your phone when you put the microSD card back in it, to be able to locate the files where you want to use them.
Also, if you're dragging files from iTunes, they have so many limitations on exporting the music, that you have to convert them to .mp3 in order for the phone to be able to play them.
Hope this helps someone...

okay I have the music on the phone in the media player, is there anyway to get it so I can use it as a ringtone. I tried the previous suggestion of putting it under Audio and it doesn't make a difference.

As far as ringtones for lg rumor the easiest way to get them is voice record then set as ringtone the other way is to convert the mp3 to 3gp2 which is a video file i use ringtone media studio software to convert to 3gp then go to image editing(same software)browse for converted 3gp file click on it save as 3gp2.now i use a memory card so i put it in my phone take a small video with phone so the memory card has created a root folder put the card in your reader find your 3gp2 file drag it to the 100lgdcf folder put the card back in your phone go to pictures my albums set as ringtone and your done wasnt that easy?
