At long last, I finally got the chance to get hands-on with Guitar Hero 3 for Wii, which is shipping November 14 for $90. The game includes some improvements over earlier incarnations, but the biggest improvement is that it's available for all the major consoles and for PCs, so Wii users like me can finally experience the carpal tunnel syndrome that PS2 and Xbox 360 owners have been enjoying for the past few years.
I gotta say, the game makes genius use of the Wii's controller.
Some assembly is required for the white plastic guitar controller (Gibson Les Paul style), which integrates the Wii Remote itself: Pop open the back cover, plug the Remote into the small connector, and then slide the Remote into the open slot. There's an opening on the front of the guitar, letting you access the Remote's buttons through the faceplate, so it looks like the Wii controller is just a built-in part of the guitar. The Wii version of the guitar has a joystick for navigation (you can't just point at the screen like you normally would on the Wii), whereas the Xbox 360 version has a directional pad.
One cool feature in the Wii version is the use of the Remote's tiny speaker. Hit a bum note, and the speaker will let you know with a ping and a rumble.
Actual gameplay is very similar to that of earlier versions of Guitar Hero; the main differences are in modes of play, of which there are several. The main one-player mode is Career mode, in which you start a band and work your way up, earning money and playing gigs. As you add to your bank account, you can buy songs, videos, and new avatars and guitars at the virtual Guitar Center (it's like real Guitar Center, only without zitty 14-year-olds playing "Stairway to Heaven" at full volume on an out-of-tune Fender Squire). Eventually you'll need to compete against "Boss" players, who include Slash and Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello.
There's also a Co-Op Career Mode that lets you unlock songs faster by cooperating with other players--a welcome feature for the impatient, like myself, who just want a huge list of songs to choose from.
In these single-player modes, hit your notes and your "Star Power" increases. When the meter's full, tilt the guitar up as you play to unleash the Star Power beast, which fires up the crowd and gives you double the points for each correct note.
In multiplayer Battle mode, Star Power becomes Battle Power, and it gives you Power-ups to use against your competitors. For instance, send a "Cut String" his way and he can't play the broken note until he fixes it by repeatedly tapping on the appropriate button on his fret board. A few of the other Power-ups include "Blown Amp," 'Whammy Bar," "Difficulty Up," and the nasty "Lefty Flip," which reverses the order of the buttons on the fret board. For lonely ax-slingers, there's an online mode that lets you compete against other Guitar Heroes.
Practice mode is just as boring as real practicing, but it's useful for learning tricky songs and runs. You can slow tracks down to more manageable speeds or select snippets of songs to rehearse. Keep practicing, and eventually you'll be able to play the track below, a crazy-difficult guitar extravaganza by speed-metal band Dragon Force. Good luck!
I think that there should be more up to date songs on Guitar Hero, stuff like Avenged Sevenfold, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Aiden, Escape the Fate, Madina Lake And more up to date stuff.
It's more older stuff which gets kind of boring
Regarding "....Guitar Hero 3 for Wii, which is shipping November 14 for $90..." I received my GH3 for Wii from Amazon.com about two weeks ago. You didn't need to deny yourself my friend....

The diversity of songs in Guitar Hero is what makes it awesome. I say, continue in that path. My chemical romance? The used? Count me out. Stupid songs from stupid bands. MCR is probably the worst band to come out in decades. They're even worse than Limp Bizkit or Good Charlotte.

My Chemical Romance? The Used? Men that music sucks. Learn to listen to real music, classic rock bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Dire Straits, etc. And if you want to find quality music that's being produced nowdays, you'd better turn MTV off and go buy something like Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, Dream Theater, Joe Satriani. Those guys really know how to play a guitar in creative ways. All the guys from MCR know is how to put their makeup on.

I agree with Alvaro on this one. Stephen I am sorry to say, but you are a moron or a girl. I believe your main problem is that you are really probably like 12 or 13, and at this point you should try listening to the real guitar gods that Alvaro has listed.

I love GH3, but I wish the Wii version had downloadable content. The Wii has an SD slot, so I don't know why this was even an issue. In the era of MP3's, there should be many many more songs.
Why are most of the bonus songs are all from 2006? How is that legend? And no Jimmy Hendrix, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Eagles, lots of other "staples" of classic rock simply not there. Must have been too expensive to license a lot of it. Hard to believe since many of those tunes are over 30 years old now.

I fall in between the above comments. I like the classic stuff - "Barracuda" is one I keep playiing over & over. "Smoke on the Water", Pink Floyd & perhaps Korn or Rush would be nice, but MCR rocks & would be fun to play. The Queens of the Stone Age is a good one on the game I just got the game five days ago & love it. Definitely worth the time & the numbness I feel in my fingers now but more songs are needed.

How dare any of you losers put down MCR, they have moe talent in there little finger than you have in your intire system. They are out there selling records and making money living the rock star life while you are sitting their playing guitar hero on the couch getting fat.
And I think adding songs like "famous last word", "black parade", "bird and the worm"(by the used) and heck even "Teenagers", would be an awesome addition to guitar hero.
Also they need some more of the new aged songs on their like some flyleaf, somemore A7X, 3 Days Grace, Godsmack, sick puppies, and maybe even like some paramore. And I had heard they are gonna have downloads for like Linkon Park and Foofighters.

One name Satriani, would totally change the diversity of the game beyond any normal aspect of guitar playing! If it's even possible to code his notes. Buckethead also would be a good challenge, along with old school eddie van-halen, a lot of us have forgotten his talent.

haha. i love how you all got in a little debate about what "real music" is. I agree that the legends should without a doubt stay on the game. But more modern bands should be added. I wouldn't mind MCR or Paramore, and some underground would be cool.
