The plug-in electric revolution is upon us. It's been estimated that the next seven years will bring 500,000 to 1.5 million EVs, exerting enormous strain on the nationwide electrical infrastructure. Thanks, Tesla!!!

Despite the obvious concerns, David Kaplan believes that when push comes to shove, we won't be forced to choose between clean air and outrageously high electric bills. A 12-year SQL Server developer at Microsoft, Kaplan started the Seattle-based V2Green, a software and hardware company that is helping utilities to streamline power to electric cars.

According to Seattlepi, the start-up's "smart charging" solution "allows utilities to control the time, pace and extent of thousands of vehicle charges--potentially reducing or increasing the loads on the electrical grid. The system, which includes software and hardware installed in vehicles, also collects information from drivers so that a car is fully charged when a person needs it."

While companies such as Comverge and EnerNoc offer similar systems, David Kaplan insists that his product is different, designed to manage power specific to electric vehicles. What's more, Kaplan is not an avid environmentalist. "I am doing this because it is a business. There is money to be made here," he says. "It is a longer-term build business than something like a typical technology business, no question about that. But when this market kicks in, it is going to be a very significant hockey stick."
