Over the past couple of years the advent of the camera phone has shaped the way that citizen journalism affects news organizations. As cameras in phones become even more ubiquitous and technologically advanced, their impact will almost certainly become even more pronounced.
Reuters is partnering with Nokia, to help harness the power of citizen journalism. The companies developed a "Mobile Journalism Toolkit," which included, "N95, a Nokia SU-8W portable keyboard, a Sony condenser mic with special N95 adapter, a tripod, and two Power Monkey power stations, including the solar-capable Explorer, all of which linked into a custom mobile CMS that allows stories to be posted almost instantly," according to Engadget.
The toolkit was given our to reporters as part of a recently concluded trial. The companies have also announced further plans to hand out the kits to journalism students.
