Eye-Fi.JPGStartup Eye-Fi is now selling the world's first 2-Gbyte Wi-Fi-enabled SD card, allowing owners of digital cameras to transfer their pictures wirelessly without hunting for that pesky USB card reader. Eye-Fi's 2GB wireless SD memory card is also available at dotPhoto.com for $99.99, as well as Buy.com, J&H, and a few other sites.

The card can be configured to automatically upload images to one or more of 17 popular online photo sharing, printing, social networking or blogging sites, as well as archive them on a PC or Mac. (Only JPEG files will be uploaded.) The included software will also automatically resize the images if necessary.

To me, that feature is the most useful; uploading photos to photo-sharing sites can be a real pain. A list of the supported services can be found on the Eye-Fi home page, and includes Flickr, Facebook, Photobucket, and Snapfish, among others. I'm not especially picky about the time I spend copying photos to a PC -- it's usually a case of simply plugging in the card and letting the associated software do its work. On the other hand, my notebook lacks a card reader, making that aspect useful.

The card includes an 802.11b/g radio, and the range id defined as 90+ feet outdoors and 45+ feet indoors.

Incidentally, a 2-Gbyte SD card costs between $15 and $36 or so, so there's a substantial premium for the Wi-Fi capability.

The unanswered question is: can I continue to shoot while wirelessly sending my pics to my nearby laptop ? What I need is a wi fi card or blue tooth card that seemlessly sends all my current action in real time directly to my laptop or PDA. If my camera is stolen, lost or damaged in action, I still have my pics safely somewhere else. CBZ >>
