This time last year, Sascha Segan posted a story on Gearlog entitled, "Mobile ESPN, We Hardly Knew Ye." Little did we know that, a year later, we would be writing a similar eulogy fo rits infant sibling, Disney Mobile, which launched a mere three months prior to the ESPN's untimely end.

Disney Mobile's CFO, Thoma Staggs, announced late last week that the parent-friendly service provider will, "cease its wireless operations" on December 31, 2007. The company is also suggesting that people pack up there things and go by Novemember 30th. News on reimbursements is still forthcoming.

Looks like parents are going to have to go back to old-fashioned methods of monitoring their kids, such as talking to them, or else falling back on one of the many mobile providers that offer similar features.

I'm thinking that the writing was on the wall with little to no "Disney" injected into any of the handsets (beyond the brief Steamboat Willie offering). However I wouldn't count them out. One year after ESPN's MVNO demise, they are more mobile than ever - with MVP on Verizon, Mobile TV and WAP. I don't see why Disney couldn't do a similar "Disney Pack" offering w/one of the big carriers. It just shows the MVNO model wasn't meant to be in the US.
