New consumer robot player Buy n Large is rolling out a full line of household robots, including a vacuum bot (SALL-E), a lawn care bot (GAR-E), a nanny bot (NANC-E), and a robotic dishwasher (WEND-E). The company also makes the industrial WALL-E digging-earth-mover robot. Sounds thrilling, doesn't it? The web site, www.buynlarge is certainly impressive, as are the 3D renderings of all the assorted robots. Ah, but all is not as it seems.
Buy n Large is a fake company, full of fake robots. It's all part of the viral marketing campaign for Disney/Pixar's upcoming film Wall-E (due for release in June 2008). The film deals with one of the company's earth mover robots. Interestingly, the animated pic's lead robotic character is nowhere to be found on the site. Though you can find a Buy n Large promotional video for WALL-E here. The robots that are offered are pretty well thought out, with the exception of the NANC-E nanny-bot that look like it might tear a poor child limb from limb.
